Two Kurdish political prisoners, “Nasser Bakerzadeh” from Urmia and “Shahin Wassaf” from Salmas, whose death sentences had previously been overturned by the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic, have been re-sentenced to death and 10 years in prison, respectively, by a parallel court.
An informed source stated that these two prisoners, who are held in the political ward, were recently summoned to the Enforcement of Sentences Office and informed of their new sentences. According to the issued verdicts, Nasser Bakerzadeh was once again sentenced to death on charges of “espionage for Israel,” and Shahin Wassaf was sentenced to 10 years in prison on the same charge.
The case of these two prisoners was reviewed in August of this year at Branch 2 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Urmia, presided over by Judge Shahini. Bakerzadeh, 25, was first arrested in August 2023 by IRGC intelligence forces and, after temporary release, was re-arrested in January of the same year. He had previously been sentenced to death in November 2024, but the verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court.
Shahin Wassaf was also arrested in September 2022 by intelligence forces and subjected to months of pressure and torture in their detention center to extract forced confessions. He was sentenced to death in October 2023, but this verdict was also overturned by the Supreme Court in April 2024, and the case was referred to a parallel court.
